We who have the good fortune to be associated with the development of this already successful new member of the family of Annual Reviews take pleasure in dedicating this sixth volume in the series to its founder and, we hope, a permanent member of its editorial staff, Windsor Cooper Cutting. Truly a pharmacologist's pharmacologist, Windsor Cutting treasured the idea of an Annual Review of Pharmacology for years until he thought the time was ripe for its appearance. The willingness of top pharmacologists to write for it and its ready acceptance by members of the profession testify to his good judgment in this one of many of his educational enterprises. Able teacher, writer, scientist, organizer, and leader, we wish him continued success in his many enterprises and we are grateful that Dean Cutting of the new University of Hawaii School of Medicine can still find time for the Annual Review of Pharmacology.

As usual, our inadequate but most sincere thanks to our Assistant Editor, Mrs. Greta Olle, our indexer, Mrs. Dorothy Read, and our printers, the George Banta Company.
